10/11/2009 : Germany goalkeeper Robert Enke dies aged 32

Germany and Hannover 96 goalkeeper Robert Enke has died at the age of 32 after being hit by a train, local police said.

After Hannover president Martin Kind confirmed Enke's death, German police released a statement saying a man had been fatally injured after being hit by a train on Tuesday evening.

'The victim is apparently national team goalkeeper Robert Enke from Hannover 96,' the statement said. 'The first police indications are that it was a suicide.'

The German soccer federation (DFB) said in a statement: 'The German team has learned of the death of Robert Enke with great shock. National team coach Joachim Loew and manager Oliver Bierhoff said 'we are all shocked, we are speechless'.'

Enke, who had won eight international caps, was in the running to play at the World Cup in South Africa next summer. He had also played club football for Borussia
Moenchengladbach, Benfica and Barcelona.

He had not been selected for Germany's friendlies against Chile on Saturday and Ivory Coast on Wednesday. But coach Loew had said Enke remained the leading candidate to be Germany's goalkeeper in South Africa.

The keeper had been diagnosed with a bacterial stomach ailment several weeks ago but played last weekend for Hannover.

Enke and his wife lost their 2-year-old daughter to a heart ailment in 2006. Kind said Enke had been 'unstable' recently, but that it had not been publicly noticed.
